Flaming Gorge

Fall Fishing at Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area

Fishermen from all over the world travel to Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area in search of the region’s giant trout. And the best part of fishing in Utah is that fishing season never ends! This fall, rent a truck or SUV from Allsave Car Rental Utah, and head north to Flaming Gorge for some great fishing.

Lake Trout

November brings some of the best trout fishing of the year at Flaming Gorge. While lake trout are notoriously difficult to catch, skilled fishermen will be greatly rewarded; fish weighing over 50 pounds have been caught in these waters! During the late fall, lake trout migrate into the shallow waters, giving fishermen a better chance of snagging a trophy fish.

Rainbow Trout

Flaming Gorge is also well known for its population of rainbow trout. Rainbow trout move into the shallows during the fall and remain near the surface after the water freezes. Fishermen find success fishing from both shore and boat throughout the region.

Kokanee Salmon

While Flaming Gorge is most well known for its trout fishing, the area is also renowned for its Kokanee salmon. During the fall, Kokanee are more difficult to catch as they begin to migrate for spawning season. While catching one of these beautiful red fish is a dream come true for most fishermen, Utah state law mandates that all Kokanee caught between mid-September and November 30 be released.

Burbot

While it is a little early in the season to catch Burbot, now is the time to register for the annual Burbot Bash at Flaming Gorge. Known as the “ugliest fish in the West”, these serpentine fish are part eel and part cod. The competition is held every January when the Burbot spawn just below the ice. Register now for a fun night of competitive ice fishing with friends.
