4 Must-Do Activities at Dinosaur National Monument

Many of our customers at Allsave Car Rental in Vernal, UT, head east to Dinosaur National Monument. The Utah entrance to the park is located less than 20 miles from our Vernal Airport location, making our rentals the perfect option for a trip to the monument. With an SUV rental or truck rental, you can explore every nook and cranny of the park. Here are four of the must-do activities in Dinosaur National Monument.

Visit Dinosaur National Monument

1. Quarry Exhibit Hall

Entering the park from the Utah side is best because you can start your trip at the Quarry Exhibit Hall. The hall is home to 1,500 dinosaur bones and a number of life-like dinosaur reconstructions. There are no fossils on the Colorado side of the monument, so be sure to see them while you are here.

2. McKee Spring Petroglyphs

The park is full of petroglyphs and pictographs; many of these forms are visible from the road, while visitors must hike to view others. The petroglyphs at McKee Spring along Island Park Road are the most accessible and impressive of all the rock-art panels in the park. While no one knows exactly what these panels mean, park rangers can provide some interpretations based on years of study and observation.

3. Take a Hike

Hiking through Dinosaur National Monument is an experience you will never forget. The trails in the park are diverse in their difficulties, allowing hikers of all ages and skill levels to enjoy the views. The most popular trails begin near the visitor centers, while other trails require more skill to access. Unlike many parks, off-trail hiking and backcountry camping are permitted; however, this is recommended only for experienced hikers.

4. Take an Auto Tour

While most of the park is composed of rugged wilderness, there are several roads cutting through monument’s interior. One of the most popular and mostly paved auto tours is the Tour of the Tilted Rocks. The tour follows a 10-mile stretch along Cub Creek Road, starting at the Quarry Visitor Center. The tour provides views of petroglyph and pictograph panels, Josie Bassett’s cabin, and impressive geologic layers.
