Hovenweep National Monument

You don’t need a time machine to travel back in time. Instead, get in your car rental and head to Hovenweep National Monument.

Located on the border of southern Utah and Colorado, Hovenweep contains the remnants of six prehistoric villages built by the ancestral Puebloan people between A.D. 1200 and 1300.

Exploring Hovenweep

Since the six villages of Hovenweep are spread out, many people start by touring the Square Tower Group. This village features remnants of 30 ceremonial structures called kivas. The best part of the site is Square Tower —a three-story building that’s perched on the edge of a large boulder. In fact many of the structures you’ll see here are built on the edge of huge boulders or deep canyons. Considering they lived on the edge of precipices, it’s no wonder that the ancestral Puebloans did such quality construction!

You’ll be able to explore much of the Square Tower Group by hiking the Little Ruin Canyon trail that leads to most of the kivas and other structures. Plan to spend one to two hours hiking so you’ll have plenty of time to explore the ancient craftsmanship — as well as the beautiful canyons, valleys, and vistas at Hovenweep.

In addition to Square Tower, take some time to experience the following ruins:

• Cajon
• Cutthroat Castle
• Holly
• Horseshoe and Hackberry

Visitors can explore Hovenweep year-round. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. this fall.
